MWC in Barcelona is big-time, but that’s not to say it’s little brother 4YFN, for start-ups, is small-time.
MWC is the big beast of mobile conferences; it runs from 27th Feb to 2nd March in a purpose built Aircraft-hangar-style megalopolis on the way to Barcelona’s El Prat airport; you can download the brochure here.
So what can we expect this year? 2,200 exhibition booths for starters, leaders and visionaries, natch, and the number of attendees running into 6 figures, 57% of them senior-level, and 84% calling MWC the most important event in the mobile industry.
Big! Speakers include Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP and the biggest fish in advertising, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix Michael Spiegelmann, Alibaba’s European GM Terry von Bilbra, the EC’s VP for the Digital Single Market Andrus Ansip, and Michael Fries, President and CEO of Liberty Global.
That’s enough name dropping (did we mention MWC has its own “networking gardens” – we’ve seen them, and they are proper horti-cultural); for those of you who like your conferences a touch more disruptive, 4YFN, that’s “4 Years From Now”, will be running across the same period at MWC’s old digs in the City’s Centre.
The event “enables startups, investors and corporations to connect and launch new ventures together”, and the more adventurous amongst London’s disruptors will doubtless be boarding the bootstrapping Ryanair express to get a taste of the action.
What can they expect? Lively chat, debate, and yes, domes! Teeny tents for dedicated, die-hard startup evangelists to spread their word, Woodstock style!
This year, expect the Women4Tech and the start-up pitching contest to be special. Oh, and 4YFN throws a mean party too – so does Barcelona.
Altogether now – best Freddie Mercury impression – “Barcelon-a-a-a-a!!”
A bad one to miss, folks!
