Hit The Rocks? Here’s How To Make Sure Your Startup Survives!

Startup life ain’t easy. We all know it. Running a startup takes guts, patience – and a whole load of bravery. Because sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Sometimes, you make mistakes. And sometimes – life is just totally, completely unpredictable. So where does that leave you and your startup?

It can leave you out on the rocks, that’s for sure. But just because things get tough – it doesn’t mean you’ve reached the end of the road! Like Gloria Gaynor said in your favourite karaoke guilty pleasure – you’re gonna survive this. How? Read on, and we’ve got some excellent tips for you.

  1. Build your resilience

Startup life is anything but comfortable. You can expect to be pushed way out of your comfort zone, right from the get go. From nutty working hours that will leave sensible bed times a distant memory, to making sure that you’ve always thought about the rest of your team’s need before your own, and getting used to outcomes that are constantly ambiguous and leave you second-guessing yourself – well, there’s a lot of discomfort for you in store. If you’re going to bristle at the first thing that makes you feel uneasy, you’re not going to be able to make it for the long haul. So start getting used to those knocks in the road – they’ll build some serious character.

  1. Get smart with your spending

You don’t need anyone to tell you that being a startup means that you’ll be keeping a close eye on your budget. But when things are getting tough, then you can feel the pinch tighter than ever. So how do you use your budget in as smart a way as possible?

Two points to consider. Focus on prioritising activities that are most important, and keep your strategy as consistent as possible. This requires planning and forethought – but it’ll pay off when it comes to the crunch.

The last thing you – or your audience wants to see – is a business that is jumping all over the place, with no idea of what its identity is meant to be, and this can be really damaging, especially if you’re already down.

So don’t blow your budget on some heroic stunt that’s completely out of character for you – make sure you consider what you do as carefully as possible!

  1. Keep your eye on the bigger picture

Sure, you’ve hit some snags on the way. And right now, things could feel like you’ve reached the end of your tether – leaving you questioning if it’s all worth the trouble you’re being put through. But if you’re really passionate about surviving this and succeeding – then you need to keep your eye on the bigger picture. If you’ve got a vision, and you really want to make it a reality, then you’ll realise that these obstacles and challenges are just scenery along the way.

While you definitely need to confront and deal with anything that comes in your way – getting too focused on the day to day challenges – and forgetting about why you’re here in the first place – can soon niggle away at your motivation and ambition.

This is why it’s important to be able to look past them, and make sure you keep your focus on your larger goal. This will help you feel empowered – and push your way through to success.
